Carry on Glamping

Some people hate camping. The thought of spending a couple of days in a canvas box with bugs crawling hither and yon over their cold, clammy body fills them with terror. Ergo, camping is often regarded as more of a convenience than something fashioned from the ethereal threads of dream and reverie.

From the music festival to the French countryside, campsites are as multitudinous as any hotel chain, and often provide their services at a fraction of the cost. Unfortunately, camping has always lacked the glamour associated with a high-priced hotel and was never likely to draw anybody with money to burn.

“Glamping”, or glamorous camping, is a completely new kind of activity that has grown in popularity with people all over the world. Chilled champagne, four-poster beds and fancy art come as standard features on any glampsite tepee, and creepy-crawlies are certainly not welcome.

Of course, diehard campers would not give their sleeping bags up for all the glitter in the world, and the craze has met with ferocious criticism despite the fact that glamping has done wonders for the popularity of the activity as a whole. Glamorous tepees are often permanent features, which contradicts with the environmental ethic that some campers hold dear.

Creature comforts are plentiful, and most glampers need only provide their own towels and food. The price of such riches is steep, however, with the most popular glampsites asking for upwards of £300 for two nights. One of the most popular British sites is in Cornwall (bookings at Cornish Tipi Holidays), but larger families can expect to have to part with up to £750 for an extra-large tepee.

Hi
Can I tell you about my glampsite! It's a lot cheaper than the one you mentioned and even more special! It is called Melusine Camping - just google it. There are 3 medieval tents with awnings romantically furnished and set on a wildflower meadow surrounded by nature in West France. All the tents have comfy beds, persian carpets, sheepskin rugs, wooden chests and wicker baskets containing all cooking, eating and of course drinking equipment. Outside your own hammocks, picnic tables, bbqs and firepits - fires every night! There is a swimming pool courtyard garden with sunloungers, a petanque badminton court with shadey drinks area, a large pond that you can do fishing or canoeing on and a round table to sip apperitifs as the sun goes down. If you book before January 6th you get a third off the already low prices. It is adult only but would be a romantic break for couples or maybe a group of friends could all come together!

he he, Glamping, people are now scared of losing their daily comforts such as a bed. I know a company called Oztent they sell innovative tents and accessories that allows you to actually go camping (not glamping) but still have the comforts.

That "Glamping" comment made me chuckle, but camping isn't camping with a caravan or a tent.

An interesting article and one that neatly sums up that ongoing question: if you love camping and your partner's not so keen, then how do persuade them to spend time "slumming it". Can see why glamping would appeal but can also imagine plenty of enthusiasts disliking the idea!

Many forms of camping available no reason why everyone should not be able to find a form that suits them!

I think I am too old-skool to get into glamping.

Give me a bivvy and two trees any day!

Although you can't beat a good double sleeping bag http://doublesleepingbag.org.uk/

ahh now I understand what the wife was saying. I am a traditional, morr "primitive" style camper. But after reading this I understand that she is a glamper, :) no wonder she always insists on a camping table- LOL.
Thanks,
Beale

Hi I was wondering if you would mind me linking to your blog from mine at Gone Camping UK ?

I am also in the process of setting up an interactive forum and was wondering if you would like to contribute through article submission and campsite reviews? The forum is accessible at:
http://www.gonecampinguk.com/forum

It should help both of us as with each entry you are able to link back to your site.

Cheers

Here in Patagonia you can spend two weeks in the mountains for the equivalent of a hundred pounds, food and provisions included, only that you will have to carry all the stuff yourself and deal with the weather and navigation thorough the terrain, or if you are up to it, fly with a Piper Cub and land in the forest, snow, etc. like I do. There are things that money cannot buy, like the views donw here. Glampers are really missing what nature has to offer. Sad for them!

to my knowledge rv camping resorts are one amongst the glimping trends. as the rv camper vans has also changed the idea of camping, and the rest is wasted by the idea of glamping. and the true meaning of camping is lost in the darkness.
